The Test That Could Save Her Life
“A stitch in time saves nine.” Taking small actions now can prevent great suffering later.
She was always the strong one.
She never missed a school meeting.
She stayed up through fevers and full moons.
She carried your world and never once said she was tired.
But inside her body, something silent may be growing.
Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers in women.
And yet, too many Sri Lankan women find out too late.
It doesn’t start with pain.
It starts quietly. That’s the danger.
What Causes Cervical Cancer?
Most cervical cancers are caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), a virus passed from person to person.
You can carry it for years without knowing.
But slowly, it can damage the cervix and lead to cancer if not caught early.
A deadly illness is better stopped before it grows.
How Do We Prevent It?
There are two powerful tools that can protect Sri Lankan women, both young and old.
1. HPV Vaccination
This vaccine protects against the virus that causes most cervical cancers.
It is safe, effective, and recommended for girls aged 10 to 16.
Boys can receive it too, to help protect future partners and themselves.
In Sri Lanka, it’s available for free through school-based programs and public health clinics.
2. Cervical Screening (Pap Smear)
A simple test that checks for abnormal cells in the cervix.
Women aged 30 to 60 should get screened every 5 years or as advised.
It takes just minutes and could save decades of life.
Why Don’t We Talk About It?
Because it feels uncomfortable.
Because we think, “I’m not at risk.”
Because our mothers never told us.
But silence doesn’t protect us. Knowledge does.
What is hidden in the dark, grows in the dark.
We must speak for ourselves. And for the women who never got the chance.
What If You Feel Healthy?
That’s exactly why you should go.
Cervical cancer gives no warning signs in the early stages.
And if caught early, it is 100% treatable.
Getting screened doesn’t mean you’re sick. It means you are taking care of your future.
Myths vs Truths
Single
“Only women with multiple partners get HPV.”
“I’m married, so I don’t need
the test.”
“The vaccine is unsafe or unnecessary.”
Family
HPV is common and can affect anyone. Most people don’t know they have it.
Even one partner over a lifetime can pass on HPV unknowingly.
It’s one of the most studied vaccines in the world and saves lives.
